Best Lawn Mowers to Buy in 2023

Best Lawn Mowers

Choosing the best lawnmower in 2023 can actually be a complex assignment, with such a lot of choice in the marketplace and an extensive variety of brands. There are a few fundamental types of mower, petrol which is the gardeners choice, electric (plugged in) and battery operated (they have come a long way!).

Once you have figured that out then you need to figure out which lawn mower is best for your application, they have different widths, power, some can be pushed, some are powered along so we have rounded up some of the best from each category and focussed on what we deem as an 'average' lawn size, which may be around 30ft of grass.

To make things less difficult, we talk about some of the important things to look for when selecting a garden mower and provide an explanation for some of the benefits and drawbacks of the different sorts.

As a quick summary here are a few of our top picks this year:

Bosch Electric Lawn Mower Rotak 34R - £109.95
Flymo Speedi-Mo 360C Electric Lawn Mower - £114.50
Yard Force 40V 34cm Cordless Lawnmower - £184.15
Mountfield HP41 Petrol Lawnmower - £189.00
Hyundai Self Propelled Petrol Lawn Mower - £299.99

Which Lawn Mower Type Do I Need?

Think of your lawn as a tennis court. A full-size court would be a medium lawn, half the court or less would be a small lawn. Anything bigger is a large lawn. We use this analogy as most people can imagine this size and this will help us below.

Rotary Lawn Mowers

Rotary lawnmowers have a single blade that rotates horizontally underneath the mower, like the propellers of a plane.

Rotary lawn mowers are the most versatile type and will cope with most types of grass. They are better than cylinder mowers at cutting longer and rougher grass.

A rotary mower may be powered by mains electric, rechargeable battery or petrol engine.

Cylinder Lawn Mowers

Cylinder lawn mowers have cylindrical blades that rotate vertically at the front of the mower. They cut against a fixed blade at the bottom. The cylinder should have multiple blades – three or more is best.

Cylinder lawnmowers are best for flat lawns that you want to keep short and well-manicured. They can be electric, petrol-powered and push mowers.

Hover Lawn Mowers

Hover lawnmowers hover above the ground, making them easier to push and adept at mowing uneven surfaces. They are a good choice for unusual-shaped lawns and cheaper than other types.

However, hover lawnmowers are not always suitable for larger gardens. They are usually electric powered and have rotary blades.

Lawnmower Power Options

Petrol Lawn Mowers

Petrol-powered lawn mowers are the best choice for large gardens where a mains cable would be unsuitable. They are a bit more expensive but much more powerful and faster at cutting. They are also easier to manoeuvre around large objects. They come in a variety of styles including ones that you push and ones that are powered.

This type of lawnmower should be serviced at intervals, and you will need to check and top up the oil. If you dont want to do much maintenance then an electric one might be a good option for you, just remember if you have a large garden just weigh up if a battery operated one would solve the issue, they are often underpowered compared to a petrol mower.

You should expect to pay £150 to £500 for a half decent petrol lawnmower, depending on your power requirements. We have listed a few different models that we recommend below:

Cordless Lawn Mowers

Cordless battery-powered lawn mowers are a hassle-free garden mower. They have all the benefits of an electric mower but you don’t need to worry about a cable or maintenance, they are more expensive though especially as the technology is newer. These mowers are more suited for smaller gardens unless you decide to buy more batteries.

These lawn mowers can be more expensive than mains electric models because of the battery, especially if you buy any additional batteries.. The lithium batteries they require pack a punch so you do get a fair while out of them, but just remember you need to charge it before you use it!

You should expect to pay £300 to £500 for a cordless lawnmower.

Electric Lawn Mowers

Most lawnmowers are powered by mains electricity. This is the best choice for small and medium-sized gardens. The mowers are smaller, cheaper to buy and easy to store. Flymo is the brand that springs to mind when you talk about electric mowers, they hover too which makes them feel lighter. But Bosch have been in this market for a while now and if you know anything about Bosch, reliability is at the heart of what they do which means you are in safe hands. We have had a Rotak 34 on long term test for a few years, in a word.. awesome!

Check that the cable will allow you to mow to the end of your garden before you buy, otherwise consider an extension lead, again check the length required.

You should expect to pay £100 to £500 for an electric mower. Hover lawnmowers are cheaper, starting at around £50. Bosch ones do tend to be the higher end of the budget.
